Hello, Pitchforks! Thank you for your interest in Jeff’s case. He has reached the Federal level in the appeal process, however, newly discovered evidence must be litigated by the Mississippi Supreme Court. Fortunately, that will all be made available to the public. Attorney General Jim Hood’s office tried to have a Motion to Seal placed on the proceedings this summer, which is almost unheard of in a death penalty appeal. The Federal judge did not entertain it and immediately turned the motion down, but the fact that the A.G. wanted to hide the record from the public is telling, I think. What do they not want the public to know? Regardless, if the Mississippi Supreme Court does not grant Jeff a hearing based on the new evidence, it will all go before the Federal Judge. I am confident that the Federal judge will grant Jeff a hearing that could lead to his conviction being overturned or a new trial. The state could not convict him again in a million years, especially since Hayne has submitted an affidavit stating that he never thought a sexual assault had occurred and that his original opinion as to the cause of death “was probably not correct”. We are very hopeful that Jeff will get the justice he, and the family of Chloe Britt so rightfully deserve. Again, thank you kindly for your interest! ~Lori~

I appreciate your kind wishes but I after my experience I consider myself fortunate not to have been executed. The corruption is out of control if you don’t have the resources to purchase the prosecutor and the Judge you are guilty. It is not about the truth it’s about the money or the publicity the soulless can get to further their own careers. Sadly, this is what happens when the wealthy become too wealthy.

Hello Lagypsyrose (love the name). I thought Pinocchio was so fitting for this case, but I also thought the original version of the story truly depicts the depravity of the prosecution and courts in Jeffrey’s case. No empathy, No sense of right or wrong. Pure selfish stubbornness.

Honesty SHOULD be the foundation of all justice systems, and as we are learning, this is so often not the case. Who is really pulling Pinocchio’s strings? Until this article, I only had a very surface understanding of shaken baby syndrome and how wrongly it was being used in trials. I suspect tunnel vision occurs more often in the case of children deaths than it does for any other cases.

Thank you for the compliment about imagery. I think in images. It seems the best way I have for making sense of things!

This sort of behavior by prosecutors and so called “Judges” is rampant all over our country. All they care about is publicity and accepting bribes from wealthy defendants not Justice. They have no souls. How could anyone live with themselves after having another human being executed? Last time I checked I didn’t see the word “God” next to their names.

Hi Pitch! A date hasn’t yet been set due to Jeff’s pending petition, I believe, but anyone who knows more details I do encourage to post them here. The details on Hayne are definitely troubling, but I’m equally troubled that it appears the prosecution actually used the testimony of Hospital workers to come up with their theory of sexual abuse. Hayne not only didn’t put the “dilation of the anus” into his autopsy but he didn’t testify to it during the trial. All of that came from the hospital reports and testimony. Jeffrey is an innocent man who was absolutely railroaded by the State of Mississippi. It’s shocking. I really have no sense of how any of the people who are involved in securing his wrongful conviction can sleep at night.

I know all too well how corrupt our Federal Court System and the State Courts are. I was denied evidence that would have exonerated me and I was denied a trial in the Southern District of New York (500 Pearl Street). In fact, they went as far as altering the transcripts of the case to hide prosecutor misconduct. I spent 5 years in a federal prison wrongfully and the phony felony charge will follow me the rest of life. see leukemia scandal on the web.

I like how you used the fairy tale format to instruct us on this very important case. I always found that many childhood books contained pretty dark stories about good and evil. And Pinocchio is certainly one of them. The importance of honesty in your life. I remember thinking of this character if I was tempted to stray from the truth as a child.
And honesty should be the foundation of the Justice system.
There is a specific children’s Hospital in Montreal that got quite a few people in trouble with allegations of shaken baby syndrome. But even if it was costly financially and emotionally, they managed to prove their case and regain custody of their child.
I understand being cautious when it comes to injuries suffered by children but in this case, the system has been treating this defendant savagely.
And Jeffrey Havard did not seem to have any prior incidents of any kind of abuse.
At the risk of repeating myself, I so enjoy the imagery of your articles. Like opening a book but in this case, they did not live happily ever after or at least, not yet.

Very informative and detailed overview of a horrific case of injustice. When is he due to be executed? This kind of article should be disseminated to prison guards and police departments. I think a lot of people who do the bidding of the powers that be are pretty ignorant and possibly even apathetic about the academic, scientific facts of cases they “work” on. The fact that Haynes was not certified and that he was accepted as such an important part of the Mississippi criminal justice system demonstrates not just corruption, but also a norm of an incredibly low intellectual standard, Stupidity and lack of education is just as dangerous as overt corruption. It means that those who might have the power to make a stand don’t, and instead simply carry out, unquestioningly, the rotten decrees of their low-brow superiors. No wonder Mississippi is a cliché among Americans for backwardness……
